You can’t build a shed without a hammer, and the same applies to working at home. A good internet connection with a proper computer and an ergonomic chair/mouse is an extremely important key to success without putting a strain on your body. No WFM station is complete without a desk. If the keyboard is mounted on the tray below the desk we recommend 30″ high vs 26″ high if the keyboard rests on the tabletop
Use an external display if you are using a laptop. This will help you avoid squinting, looking down, and will also provide you with more screen real estate. A standing desk is also a great addition to add to your home office or workspace. It is important to move your body every hour or so, and therefore working from sitting to standing provides both an ergonomic and healthy solution
This brings up the next important step to have a successful remote experience, exercise. Taking time to step away from the computer to stretch and move your body actually allows for a more productive mental headspace as well as revamping the blood circulating in your body. Sitting for too long can create prolonged health effects. Take time to go outside (socially distanced) for a quick walk and to take in some sun. If you are working inside all day, taking 10-15 minutes to step out and remove yourself from your work area is extremely beneficial to separate yourself from your workspace and drink in some Vitamin D since it is the summertime!
Separating your WFM space with your living space is a crucial step to creating a more productive space. You may be homeschooling your children, dealing with pets, or dreaming of taking a nap if your bed is next to your desk. Therefore we recommend having some degree of separation from distraction. This can be as simple as having a partition or a minimal sliding screen to help with energy, flow, and overall feng shui
Whether you are working with a client, a team, or both, it’s important now more than ever to communicate, but not overcommunicate! Find a conversational balance between all working parties to demonstrate that you are both on top of your work and are also able to work independently. Set clear expectations on when you are or are not working. It is very easy to find yourself working all the time when working from home. Therefore, create boundaries of when you are willing to work and when you are completely off the clock. Whether you are using Slack, Microsoft Teams, or simply texting, utilize any and all Do Not Disturb feature to avoid constantly checking your device. You are more than entitled to your time away from work, and conversely a distraction-free work environment
